The Dairy Farmers of Manitoba High School Athlete of the Week is Abbey Shand of the Churchill Bulldogs basketball team.
Shand, a point guard, finished the school season by leading her team to the Winnipeg 1, Tier 2 championship title, scoring 106 points, which included 20 3-pointers over the three-game playoff series. During the season, she led the Bulldogs to a 21-4 record averaging 33.0 points per game and leading the team in defensive rebounds, assists and steals. In February, she reached the 1,000-point plateau in 30 games. Coach Kevin Shand states, ”Finishing first at the end of the regular season and winning the championship was such a great experience for the girls. Abbey’s points milestone this year was also pretty neat, but she would be the first to tell you that was also a team accomplishment. To me, what was most impressive about her season was that she carried an assist-to-turnover ratio of 3.6 (123 to 34). That is rare to see at any level of basketball.”
This grade 11 student maintains a 95% academic average.
